How to Make a Paper Plate Dragon

Step 1: Paint all the paper plates green and let them dry.

Step 2: Cut strips of colored paper 1 1/2 to 2″ wide. Snip triangle shapes on one edge of the strip. You can use one or two colors for these spiked strips to glue to the dragon’s body, tail and neck.

Tip: You can also make the other edge zig-zag or wavy design using craft scissors or cut smaller triangle shapes.

Step 3: Glue these strips to the large paper plate and 3 of the small paper plates.

Step 4: Using another color cut several more strips. Cut out the triangle shapes and glue these to the tops (on the backside) of the paper plate for the dragon’s spikes.

For the tail section (one of the small paper plates) cut out a longer and larger spike and glue on the left side of the plate to create the spiked end of the tail.

Step 5: Take the other large paper plate and cut out the dragon’s nose, mouth and eyes in one piece. Glue on some wiggle eyes and using a black marker, you can draw on some eye lashes. Cut out a mouth shape with red paper. You can even add some yellow sharp teeth. For the nose, just fill in with black marker.

Tip: You can use this template here.

Step 6: Glue the large plate (with the dragon’s head) to one of the small plates.

Step 7: Using the hole punch, punch a hole in the plates to connect them with the pipe cleaners. Use 1/3 of the pipe cleaner and thread through the holes. Twist off the ends to hold together.

Tip: This allows the dragon to be arranged in slightly different positions when you hang him up.

Step 8: Using the black paper, cut out four legs and glue to the large paper plate (dragon’s body).

Step 9: Glue several paper clips on the backside of each section of the dragon. Use these paper clips for hanging up on the wall.

You can also add some fire to this paper plate dragon crafts for kids. Just cut out some flames using red, orange and yellow paper and glue this to the dragon at his mouth.
